Vaughan Writers

Vaughan WritersBased in:

Leicester, United Kingdom

Brief Description:

After finishing the Creative Writing course at Vaughan College in 2004 some of us continued to meet informally and set up the group in 2005, recruiting new members from graduating courses each year.  Numbers have fluctuated through the years, mostly due to moving house and, sadly, illness but we have ten members ‘on the books’ at the moment, five of whom are from the original course.

Venue, Times and Frequency of Meetings:

Vaughan Writers now meet at The Belmont Hotel, De Montfort Street, Leicester, on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 6.30pm until 8.30pm.  We can usually be found in the Edwin Room, in Jamie’s Bar, or nearby!

First Established and a Brief History:

Since our formation in 2005, the group’s activities have adapted over the years according to our meeting place, for example when we met at Vaughan College we held Summer and Christmas Readings there for our members to showcase their work.

We take turns to set writing challenges for each meeting, attend lectures at literary events, and have had professional writers speak at meetings and give workshops.

We have published two anthologies and our third will be out soon.  The first, “Against the Wall”, won first prize in the NAWG annual competition, and the second, “Off the Wall”, was highly commended a few years later.

With Grace Dieu we also brought out a booklet of poetry and prose for the “Our Leicester” event in 2011.

Members have won or been placed in competitions, had plays produced, and have performed at the Edinburgh Fringe.

More About Vaughan Writers:

We do not have a subscription, just charging members £2.50 for each meeting attended, which goes into a kitty.  This used to be to cover the cost of hiring a meeting room but since discovering The Belmont (where we meet at no charge) we use the kitty for various things such as helping to finance our next anthology.  The atmosphere at The Belmont is convivial and welcoming, and the hotel has the advantage of a free car park and being near to bus routes.

Top Tips for Other Groups:

Not sure that we feel qualified to offer any “Top Tips” for other groups, but would just quote our friend and former tutor, the writer Sally Spedding, and say “Keep on Keeping on …”

Contact Information:

Vaughan Writers is a very informal group with no committee as such, but have a spokesperson and a treasurer.

We would welcome enquiries from potential new members.
