The Grifters

The Grifters

Jim Thompson (1906 – 1977) was a prolific pulp fiction writer of some note producing over 30 novels.  These hard-boiled tales of violence, crime and the dirty underbelly of American society have been turned into a number of films including “The Killer Inside Me”, “The Getaway”, and “The Grifters”.

The Grifters describes the marginal lives of con artists and how this impacts on the relationship between a mother and her son.

You’re left with a feeling of grittiness. A novel with an edge that immerses you in its’ time.

I can clearly picture the black and white movie in my mind – the way he writes takes me back to that time.

I also have some of his other novels and they all give great character insights.

Some characters just make you think of what it was like to be in that era.

Although not quite my thing, I do love his characters.

This is a great novel by a wonderful American writer. Lots of psychological insights into the chaotic mind.

What I found particularly interesting was the mother’s way of thinking and her attitude towards her son.
